Web user interface design for offshore wind optimised inter-array cable layout solution
The latest groundbreaking software solution from Kinewell Energy rapidly designs an economically optimised inter-array cable layout for offshore wind farms, to maximise profits and reduce electrical losses, whilst providing productivity gains. Our task was to produce a web-based user interface for the solution accessible worldwide for clients to use via multiple devices.

Challenge
The next-generation Kinewell Layout Optimisation of Cable (KLOC) solution saves offshore wind developers around 20% of cable CAPEX over a project’s life by designing an economically optimised inter-array cable layout, appropriately prioritising the optimisation of capital costs against operational costs. The optimisation process reduces cable length, lowering CAPEX, reducing electrical losses and maximising energy sales.
Our task was to produce a web-based user interface accessible worldwide for clients to use via multiple devices. As well as the initial design and development, this is part of an ongoing project which we will support by helping add new user interface features when required.
Solution
Our colleagues worked on various tasks to complete the user interface. This included the initial design using wireframes and creating styled versions of the design. We also worked on the coding to create the user interface pages and database, along with thorough testing and refining of the system based on user feedback. The KLOC tool utilises cloud computing which clients can access through an intuitive web app, anywhere, anytime using multiple devices.
Benefit
The launch of the new KLOC inter-array cable layout optimisation software aims to provide more cost-effective cable layouts as well as provide clients with productivity gains while developing optimised cable layouts. This allows client engineers to focus on tasks that cannot be automated and require critical human thought, enhancing engineering team productivity.
