JBA Consulting is currently seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Project Manager, who has skills in overseeing the planning, execution, and delivery of software projects from inception to completion.

Our Technology Data Software & Development (TDSD) teams undertake specialist system, software and data development for the natural and built environment. We typically work with central government, environmental, transportation and utility organisations, and private companies. These include clients such as Network Rail, Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, Central Government and Local Authorities. They work with us because of our reputation in providing innovative and novel software solutions, and these often require highly resilient and secure systems, and the presentation and analysis of vast amounts of data at scale. 

Under the direction of management within TDSD, the successful candidate will get involved in all stages of the software development life cycle and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications.

The successful candidates would be part of our TDSD teams and would report to the line managers of those teams.

Key duties of the role include:

  • Develop comprehensive project programmes outlining scope, objectives, milestones, resources and timelines.
  • Lead and motivate cross-functional teams comprising of software developers, business analysts, test analysts, data scientists and other professionals to achieve project goals.
  • Assist in the allocation of resources effectively to ensure project tasks are completed efficiently and within budget.
  • Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to minimise project disruptions.
  • Provide guidance and expertise to ensure solutions are designed, developed and implemented according to industry best practices.
  • Facilitate clear and open communication among project team members, stakeholders, and clients throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Monitor project progress, identify deviations from the programme, and take corrective actions as needed to keep the project on track.
  • Ensure project deliverables meet quality standards and fulfil client requirements.
  • Monitor project expenses and track budget utilisation to ensure projects are completed within financial constraints.
  • Update key monthly project forecasts and be responsible for all invoicing requirements and deadlines.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external clients & stakeholders to gather requirements, provide updates, address concerns and manage expectations.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation including requirements, specifications, schedules and reports.
  • Confidence to lead project meetings and present updates and progress to a wide audience.

Qualifications and experience

Who we are looking for:

Degree qualified would be desirable, although not essential and candidates must be able to demonstrate equivalent work experience.  A project management qualification such as Agile PM, Prince 2 or ScrumMaster, is essential.

Candidates will have the following essential experience:

  • Proven experience working as a Project Manager (PM), preferably in a software development environment. A background in GIS technologies is preferred, although not essential.
  • Excellent PM skills, including the ability to develop project programmes, allocate resources, and track progress against milestones.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and motivate high-performing teams.
  • Ability to effectively prioritise tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders effectively.
  • Demonstrate experience of delivering projects during interview.
  • Operational experience of the Office 365 suite and MS Teams.
  • Proficient in the use of PM tools such as MS Project.

The following experience is desirable:

  • Understanding or knowledge of GIS software platforms such as QGIS.
  • Experience in using Azure DevOps during a Software Development Life Cycle, and effective planning & management of sprints.
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies such as Agile, Scrum and Waterfall.
  • Solid technical background with proficiency in software development languages and tools.
  • A passion for GIS technology and its potential to address complex spatial challenges.
