The role will be to support the growing workload in our fisheries and wider Catchment and River Restoration Team (CRRT), including fish pass design, fish ecology impact assessments and river restoration schemes. 

Day to day responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Analysis and interpretation of fish population data
  • Interpretation of hydraulic modelling results to infer impacts on fish ecology
  • Construction / amendment of hydraulic models to support river restoration and fish pass design
  • Working with engineers and contractors to develop suitable temporary and permanent works
  • Contributing to WFD Assessments
  • Working with technicians and the wider design team to develop high quality design drawings
  • Inputting to river restoration schemes.

Location:

The post would ideally be based at our Saltaire, BD18 3LF office, however we can be flexible on location for the right candidate. Saltaire in West Yorkshire is where our Hydroecology team is based along with other environmental specialisms including: landscape architecture, hydrogeology, environment and sustainability, heritage and archaeology, and environment impact assessment providing an opportunity to gain a wider appreciation across the sector.

Qualifications and experience

Key competencies required for the role:

You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills and be an effective verbal and written communicator. The ability to work successfully as part of a team is vital, as you will be liaising directly with colleagues, third parties and other design members and an appreciation of and enthusiasm for fisheries, hydroecology and the wider river environment. 

Core skills and experience to this post are:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in ecology, biology or any other suitable environmental science. 
  • A full, clean UK driving licence.
  • Experience using ArcMap/QGIS (or similar software).
  • Demonstrable enthusiasm for the river environment and freshwater ecology.
  • Demonstrable experience of planning and organising task delivery.

It is desirable, but not essential, for the successful candidate to have the following skills/experience:

  • Experience designing river restoration schemes or fish passes
  • Experience building and using hydraulic models (including one/two-dimensional (1/2/3D) modelling)
  • Experience working in an office environment
  • Experience working outdoors.

Where necessary training and experience of the above can be ‘gained and supported on the job.’
