Supporting the Tees Tidelands FCRIP with innovative community-focused engagement
Analysing community needs to develop an innovative engagement plan to raise awareness and increase resilience in Port Clarence, as part of the Tees Tidelands Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme (FCRIP).
The Tees Tidelands Programme is a series of projects designed to help the River Tees estuary adapt to climate change, whilst also reducing flood risk, helping nature to recover and reconnecting local communities with the estuary. One of the areas identified as part of this programme was the village of Port Clarence in Stockton-on-Tees.

Understanding community needs to shape effective engagement
The village of Port Clarence frequently experiences significant tidal and fluvial events, which, alongside various social challenges, contribute to low resilience, reduced ability to recover from flooding and low flood warning uptake. Raising awareness was crucial to addressing these problems. We developed an innovative stakeholder engagement strategy to support the Port Clarence community in building resilience and connecting with their local environment. To support the development of the engagement plan, we analysed the communities' needs and created a detailed stakeholder map, helping to identify the most effective engagement strategies.
A diverse engagement programme to strengthen flood resilience
The programme has overall objectives of increasing flood warning sign-ups, building community understanding of flooding and flood resilience, and supporting residents to connect with the natural environment. Using these objectives as a guide, we developed a suite of innovative engagement activities. This included creating multimedia resources and developing a community photography competition. We also attended a series of engagement events, allowing stakeholders to discover more about the project, raise questions and discuss the long-term benefits of the FCRIP scheme.
