In a recent issue of Construction and Civil Engineering magazine, Marc Pinnell, our Managing Director, explored how partnerships and innovation are central to JBA's sustainable growth and progress.
Marc reflected: “When we started the business 30 years ago, we established an ethos and core values centred on sharing, innovation and being different, all of which have stood us in good stead throughout this time. In line with these principles, we remain an employee-owned, independent business. This offers many benefits, including the freedom to determine our own path and invest in what we consider important, which allows us to innovate and stand out.”
Marc added, “Our success is reinvested in the business. Consequently, we have embraced different approaches, continued to evolve, and developed a highly sustainable business. Independence and collaboration are especially important to us.”
Collaboration for integrated, long-term resilience
Collaboration sits at the heart of what we do here at JBA. We work closely with clients, partners and stakeholders to build trusted relationships that enable integrated delivery and shared success.
In a changing climate, the scale and complexity of today’s challenges mean that progress depends on building collaborative ecosystems. Bringing together clients, consultants, local authorities and communities to co-create solutions that are technically robust and socially meaningful.
This partnership-led approach is reflected in the way our integrated teams operate successfully on major programmes.
One example is our work as part of the Southeast Hub Integrated Delivery Team (IDT) alongside the Environment Agency (EA) and VolkerStevin. Read more about this ongoing collaboration here.
Through this business-wide collaborative ethos, we have been able to take on complex challenges, from flood and coastal risk management to climate adaptation. The emphasis of our work is on both delivery and continuous improvement - for shared learning, innovation and the development of best practice across projects and partnerships.
Innovation driving smarter, future-ready solutions
Innovation is embedded throughout this process. We continue to invest in advanced modelling, data and digital tools to strengthen decision-making and improve project outcomes.
Just one of the ways we do this is through our innovation acceleration programmes
JBA Labs and JBAi.
By combining scientific expertise with evolving technologies, we can provide clients with deeper insights into risk, supporting more informed and forward-looking strategies. This focus on innovation ensures we remain agile and able to respond to new challenges.
How collaboration amplifies innovation
Working with partners creates opportunities to test new approaches, apply emerging technologies and create solutions that help build resilience.
For example, our work with Affinity Water to design and develop the cutting-edge technology JSAT® now supports more proactive management of drinking water quality. Our JSAT® system uses a series of proprietary innovations to detect changes in land use through a machine learning-enabled analysis of satellite images. Discover more about JSAT® here.
Marc concludes: “Our 30-year milestone is not just a celebration of the past, but a springboard for the future. We’ve grown by staying true to our values – innovation, independence, and collaboration – and by building strong relationships with clients and partners. As we look forward, our ambition is clear: to continue delivering sustainable, technology-driven solutions that help tackle the challenges of climate resilience and infrastructure for generations to come.”
