Project case studies

Castletown Harbour Walls

Detailed design, Contract administration and design support (Isle of Man Government)

Following on from the success of the Isle of Man Coastal options appraisal, we were commissioned to undertake the Castletown Harbour detailed design. Various flood defence wall structures were designed including cantilever, sheet piled and mass gravity walls. They were all designed as sympathetically as possible to minimise visual impact to the historic harbour town.

We are acting as NEC Project Manager and offer design support through the construction period. The construction started on site in May 2017 and forecast for completion in March 2018.

Detailed Design and Construction Supervsion (Denbighshire Council) – Design and Build – Balfour Beatty

We are currently undertaking the detailed design of this £20m coastal defence scheme. This will be one of the largest coastal defence schemes in Wales and comprises of a rock revetment, sea wall and beach re-charge.

Our appointment includes all environmental surveys and consenting and coastal process numerical modelling. We will also be responsible for the supervision of the construction works. We are completing this design and build project in conjunction with Balfour Beatty.

JBA Orkney Islands Causeway

Design for Orkney Islands Council

We were commissioned to develop coastal defence designs and investigate the potential for tidal energy generation through the Churchill Barriers in Orkney, Scotland. The project included design of four new causeway coastal defence options including new rock armour, beach re-charge, offshore breakwater and bridge options.

The options appraisal included the design of tidal energy capture systems, detailed financial planning and economic analysis. The designs have been supported with wave, tide and sediment transport numerical and physical modelling.

Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Councils

The South West Coastal Group, comprising of all councils in Devon and Cornwall, have recently appointed us to roll out our coastal asset management system, AssetCoast®, for all coastal frontages in the region.

Devon and Cornwall councils identified their lack of asset management system and the need for better monitoring of asset condition. The AssetCoast® methodology will attempt to address these shortcomings in their current procedures.
