Senior/Principal AI Software Engineer

We have been developing innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies for more than ten years, allowing us to be at the forefront of climate resilience.  This year we have also launched JBAi, a major investment programme accelerating the pace and scale at which we develop and adopt AI technology across our business.  We see the adoption of AI as a crucial component to achieving our company ambition, and the energy and investment we are applying to this area reflects its importance to us.

To support our JBAi initiative, we are excited to announce the creation of a new role:  Senior or Principal AI Engineer.  Senior or Principal grade will be determined based on experience and chartership status. 

As our Senior or Principal AI Engineer, you will drive the development of transformative innovations which solve complex environmental problems and stimulate business growth.  You will be supported by our established teams to design, build, and optimise AI models and algorithms.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Strategic leadership: Actively participate in shaping and guiding our AI strategy, aligning technological capabilities with business objectives.
  • AI model development: Lead the development and deployment of AI solutions, from concept to production. Actively participate in code development, testing and technical oversight.
  • Optimisation: Troubleshoot and optimise AI models for performance and efficiency.
  • Team collaboration: Collaborate with our multi-disciplinary teams to understand our business requirements and translate them into AI solutions.
  • Mentorship: Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior AI engineers.
  • Ongoing research:  Keep pace with emerging AI technologies and methodologies, ensuring our solutions remain at the cutting edge.

Location:

This role will ideally be based at our head office in Skipton BD23 3FD or alternatively Wallingford OX10 9BS (UK) office.  JBA supports agile working which provides for greater flexibility with the way that we work.

Qualifications and experience

Essential requirements:

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD (or equivalent) in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning (ML), or a related field
  • Significant hands-on experience in AI/ML model development and deployment in a commercial setting, with a strong portfolio of projects delivered.
  • Proficient in a range of AI subfields such as Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, speech recognition or Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
  • Knowledge of machine learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-Learn, and proficiency in Python or C/C++
  • Knowledge of software development best practices, such as source control (Git), task management (Azure DevOps) and the ability to perform code reviews.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively to various stakeholders.
  • Commitment to continued professional development and to staying at the cutting edge of AI development. 

Desirable attributes:

  • Knowledge of Linux, GPUs and OS internals
  • Knowledge of cloud services, primarily AWS and Azure
  • Certification with Alliance for Data Science Professionals or similar professional body is desirable.
