Archaeology and Heritage Consultant

We are seeking to appoint a Graduate Archaeology and Heritage Consultant to our archaeology and heritage team on a permanent basis.

Our team has a national remit which will provide you with a rewarding, interesting and challenging workload. You may be working on diverse projects such as flood management and alleviation schemes, quarries, housing and retail developments, Scheduled Monument condition surveys, historic landscape management plans, community engagement and Listed Building Consents. We also deliver new practice and approaches through our JBA Labs innovation stream. We work across the historic environment and projects will encompass archaeology, historic buildings, geoarchaeology and historic landscapes

The main responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the wider Archaeology and Heritage team in heritage work across a variety of nationwide projects.
  • Baseline research including site and archives visits.
  • Data management including GIS and preparation of figures.
  • Contributing to the preparation of desk-based assessments (DBA), heritage statements, written schemes of investigation, environmental statement (ES) chapters, Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), setting assessments and other formal written advice.
  • Inputting to the design of projects and developments to minimise heritage impacts and realise enhancements or benefits.
  • Preparing and submitting Scheduled Monument Consent and Listed Building Consent applications.
  • Assisting with developing new work business and contributing to the preparation of tenders and fee proposals.
  • Assisting with project management and implementing quality and health and safety principles.

Location: The role will be based in our Saltaire, BD18 3LF office, although other offices can be considered for the right applicant.  JBA supports agile working which provides for greater flexibility with the way that we work.

Qualifications and experience

Key competencies required for the role:

You may have professional experience already and be looking for new and exciting challenges or may be applying directly from education. Experience of undertaking heritage assessments, an understanding of the planning system, or a specific area of relevant expertise would be valuable, but an enthusiasm for learning and an interest in the delivery of high-quality heritage and design solutions are also key attributes.

You will be able to communicate with different audiences and be able to work effectively as part of a team and independently. The ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently is also important.

Core Skills and Experience:

  1. A degree in archaeology, heritage management or other relevant subject, or equivalent.
  2. Understanding of British archaeology, historic buildings and historic landscapes.
  3. Able to communicate fluently, with experience and confidence in talking to a variety of audiences.
  4. Concise and clear report writing skills.
  5. The ability to work effectively independently and within teams.
  6. The motivation and initiative to prioritise your own workload.
  7. Membership of CIfA and/or IHBC or willingness to become accredited.
  8. Full driving licence.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of geoarchaeology and palaeoenvironmental archaeology.
  2. Knowledge and understanding of marine and inter-tidal heritage issues.
  3. Built heritage recording.
  4. Experience of assessing effects on the setting of heritage assets.
  5. Monument condition surveys and assessment.
  6. GIS (ideally QGIS) and CAD software packages.
