Senior Geotechnical Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with strong experience in design, for an immediate start to join our team within our growing office in Peterborough. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and/or support to civil/structural engineering projects within fluvial, tidal and coastal environments, including major Flood and Coastal Risk Management schemes.

This role is pivotal to the delivery of a range of engineering and environmental improvement projects, including options appraisal, concept design and detailed scheme design. The post will involve leading and/or supporting geotechnical design and delivery of a variety of projects and will include guiding and mentoring more junior Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists. You will also undertake site works and input to bid and tender preparation.


The post will be based in our Peterborough office and will work closely with engineers and other technical staff from across JBA’s offices. You would be joining a dynamic team who are enjoying project success which has been recognised by recent industry awards.

Qualifications and experience

Key competencies required for the role:

JBA Consulting is a client-focused organisation. Excellent report writing and effective communication skills are therefore essential to this role. Candidates should have a sound appreciation for engineering principles and good analytical skills for problem solving. Self-motivation and a high degree of organisation are also considered key attributes.

A valid UK driving license and willingness to travel to sites and other offices is essential.

Who we’re looking for:

A degree in civil engineering or geology with postgraduate geotechnical qualification is required. You will have experience in the investigation and design of earthworks, retaining walls and foundations. You must be able to scope, organise and supervise ground investigations and carry out geotechnical analysis and design to Eurocodes.

Chartered status is important to JBA and valued by our clients. Applicants should be chartered or close to becoming chartered and have a proven track record in geotechnical project delivery.

Previous professional experience is essential, preferably from a consultancy background.

Expertise with respect to the following core skills is expected:

  • Geotechnical engineering
  • Geotechnical analysis and design to Eurocodes for earthworks, retaining walls and foundations
  • Preparation of Desk Study Reports, GIR’s and GDR’s
  • Preparation of geotechnical specifications for construction works
  • CDM Regulations
  • Scoping, organising and supervising ground investigations

Candidates would be expected to have some experience in in the following:

  • Leading and QA of geotechnical engineering analysis and design
  • Leading and mentoring of technical staff
  • Project Management

Experience using the following software would be beneficial:

  • Geostudio Slope W /Seep W (or similar software)
  • Frew / WALLAP
  • ALP
