Assistant Landscape Architect

JBA is an employee owned, dynamic and growing company with broad ranging opportunities for Landscape Architects working in the environment sector. As part of the growing national Landscape and Arboriculture offer, the Newcastle Environment team is expanding, and we are seeking a motivated Landscape Assistant to join us.

The successful candidate will support more senior staff to deliver projects requiring landscape assessment, planning and design skills. Many of the projects will relate to our framework successes with the Environment Agency focussing on Climate Resilience work as well as inputting to a diverse portfolio of development and planning projects for clients such local authorities, third sector and private commercial clients.

We wish to see candidates who want to explore the relationship between climate change, landscape, water and placemaking on a wide range of exciting and varied projects across the UK. We want staff to share our enthusiasm for practical, effective design, whether urban or rural, and for sustainable landscape solutions, Natural Flood Management, and green infrastructure.

We are looking for a candidate with a degree in Landscape Architecture who is either looking for a year out placement, has recently completed their post graduate education or has some experience in industry working as a Landscape Architect.

Location:

This role will be based from our office in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 5JE; we also have an agile working policy to support flexible working.

Qualifications and experience:

We are looking for a candidate with a degree in Landscape Architecture who is either looking for a year out placement, has recently completed their post graduate education or has some experience in industry working as a Landscape Architect.

The successful candidate will:

  • hold a degree in Landscape Architecture or equivalent.
  • be actively working towards becoming a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute.
  • have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • be a team player, with a positive attitude to work.
  • be flexible with good problem solving skills.
  • have an interest in the water environment.

Candidates must have proven skills in the use of design software, although training will be provided to further develop these skills. We would expect the successful candidate to have at least working knowledge of the following software:

  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator).
  • 3D software such as AutoCAD Civils 3D, 3DS Max, Infraworks,
  • ArcGIS and/or QGIS to produce ZTVs and other plan-based graphic output.

A valid UK driving licence is required.

As part of their role, the successful candidate will be required to undertake the following:

  • create high-quality graphics to support reports, consultation and presentation material, photomontages and 3D visualisations for landscape projects and engineering projects with integrated landscape solutions.
  • assist in the preparation of design packages, from initial site concepts and sketches to detailed design and specification.
  • support senior staff to prepare LVIA/LVA and character/sensitivity assessments, including site appraisals and report and graphics preparation.
  • assist with site survey work and photography for landscape assessments and construction supervision.
  • carry out planning and policy research.
