I manage a team working on projects investigating solutions to flood risk and drainage issues; this involves working on a variety of private and public sector projects including Flood Risk Assessments  for mixed use developments, road drainage schemes, Sustainable Drainage Systems and foul drainage, watercourse diversions and culverting and environmental assessments.

My job means my workload is diverse, day to day I could be speaking with clients or local authorities, designing a flood protection scheme or drainage system, investigating flooding issue, writing a report, supervising and advising other engineers on their work or visiting site to manage sub-contractors.  Recent projects I have worked on demonstrate the breadth of studies engineers working in the water sector can be involved in. In engineering there is no ‘one solution fits all’ approach – each project is different and requires individual take on it.

Recent projects

  • Management of a design of a flood protection scheme for one of the only surviving 17th Century Dutch Water Gardens in the UK
  • Management of a design of surface (including SuDS) and foul water drainage systems for 45ha large mixed use development site and undertaking flood risk assessment for the site
  • Design of a spillway from a disused china clay quarry, including hydrological and hydraulic assessment
  • Preparation of a water management strategy as part of remediation works for twin bore railway tunnel
  • Undertaking design of surface water drainage design, environmental assessments and consultations for £500M motorway scheme
  • Contribute to design of a SuDS scheme to cater for a new £750M University Campus on 116ha ‘greenfield’ site. The scheme included a 10ha feature lake and associated wetland providing regional treatment and attenuation as well as amenity and wildlife habitat functions as well as water quality analysis, nutrient management strategy, groundwater abstraction, water recirculation system and pumping stations and off-site infrastructure improvements.

Working in engineering offers me the opportunity to make a difference to our environment, being innovative can be the difference between a scheme progressing or not and having that influence is very rewarding. It also allows me to build strong relationships with the Clients and representatives of other disciplines involved in the projects.
