We recently launched our 2018 Graduate Recruitment Programme with an initial focus on our engineering intake. We asked Gareth Mills, Technical Director and Design Manager for JBA Bentley, to tell us why working at JBA is so rewarding and about all the great engineering experience you can get with us.
The engineering part of the business is really growing rapidly at the moment and is an area in which we see the company continuing to expand and develop. This growth has meant we are able to provide graduate engineers with an opportunity to get involved in a wide range of projects.
We provide all our graduates with a good grounding in engineering design, management, health and safety, environment and sustainability. The structure of the company also allows us to provide more responsibility at a pace that is comfortable to each candidate.
On successful completion of probation periods, all graduates are signed up to our professional membership agreements and if applicable, our Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) accredited training agreement. This ensures that we can help our graduates on their path to professional accreditation by targeting the right opportunities at the right times to further their development.
We approach training very differently to many other organisations. It is at the heart of how we operate as a company. Each staff member has their own dedicated annual training budget and time allowance. This investment in staff ensures we continually progress our skills and knowledge so that we are experts in our industry.
We have extensive experience of working for the Environment Agency, Rail Sector and Local Authorities as well as within the private sector, including commercial organisations and developers. We have also been appointed on Engineering Services Frameworks with Local Authorities to provide an emergency response.
On the Water, Environment and Management (WEM) Framework, JBA have created a joint venture with J N Bentley to provide an integrated team for design and build projects. However, we didn’t just stop there. To ensure the success of this joint venture, we have completely co-located our companies in two major engineering hubs. We sit our designers and constructors alongside each other so we can deliver and manage our projects together. We understand the pressures of our counterparts, support each other and have a collective goal. It’s a different way of working from a traditional project delivery model.
This collaborative approach by JBA Bentley has demonstrated its success via industry awards with the ICE Merit and Environment Agency Project Excellence Awards for innovation, efficiency and teamwork.
We don’t just collaborate in our own offices. JBA has over 21 offices in the UK and the engineering team pulls on the rest of the expertise of the business, working closely with our modelling, hydrogeomorphology, coastal and ecology teams. This is great for knowledge and skill sharing to ensure we provide our clients with the best service and solutions possible.
Our collaborative approach means designs are developed to create efficient, effective and sustainable solutions. Our aim is to achieve this with minimal environmental impact during design, construction, operation and decommissioning, which minimises our clients overall project impact on the landscape and environment.
Innovation is one of our core values and research and development are essential components of many of our projects. We invest strongly in research and development, responding to the needs of clients to provide bespoke innovative solutions. We incorporate the latest technical knowledge through collaboration with industry, academia and government.
Our commitment to innovation and technical excellence has enabled us to deliver a diverse range of industry leading projects over the last decade, and to sustain our reputation for industry leading innovation, technology and methodology development.
What to expect
In engineering, every project, every problem, and every day is different. It’s what makes engineering as a career so appealing! You’ll be constantly learning and developing ideas and solutions for future projects, whilst working on many different types, with many different people at the same time. You will be encouraged to learn as you go, applying what you have learnt to subsequent schemes to aid continuous improvement.
In the words of Ana Bermejo, Graduate Civil Engineer and recent graduate “I applied to JBA Consulting because I was inspired by how the company seeks for innovation while respecting the environment. After almost a year I have worked on a wide range of projects, from the scoping phase to the detailed design, and gained a lot of responsibility. Most importantly, I have felt strongly supported in my career development since the first day and I have found many good friends who made me feel at home.”
