The annual Flood & Coast Excellence Awards were held on Wednesday 8 June with both JBA Consulting and JBA Bentley picking up awards.
Recognising the best of flood and coastal erosion risk management, the Flood & Coast Excellence Awards were truly a night of celebration for everybody at JBA as both JBA Consulting and JBA Bentley were named as winners.
We were delighted to attend the prestigious awards ceremony and incredibly proud to see our South West Property Flood Resilience Pathfinder project and the JBA Bentley, Bentley Ings Pumping Station Refurbishment project recognised by the Flood & Coast judging panel.
Climate Resilient Places Winner – JBA Consulting South West Property Flood Resilience Pathfinder
This Climate Resilient Places award recognises projects and programmes that improve place-based resilience to the future impacts of extreme weather on communities, infrastructure and assets.
Being named as winners emphasises the incredible work of the South West PFR Pathfinder team to firstly identify the barriers to the uptake of and delivery of PFR in the South West, and to secondly provide a range of innovative solutions to address this in order to provide individuals, businesses and communities with greater awareness of their flood risk.
Throughout this project the JBA team assisted in the development of a range of resources including the creation of the BeFloodReady website, the production of a series of animations and the publication of a PFR information booklet.
“The entire project team and everyone who worked on the South-West PFR Pathfinder are absolutely delighted to have won the Climate Resilient Places Award at the Flood & Coast Excellence Awards.
It was a perfect illustration of effective collaboration and a one team partnership approach. And despite having to work remotely for much of the 2 years due to COVID, our award I believe recognises how all the outputs such as the BeFloodReady website and Climate Change Centre have provided the legacy that Defra and Environment Agency sought from the start.
Our Aardman Animations ‘Missy’s Tale’ film also provides a brilliant and engaging way to raise awareness of flood risk, highlighting how Property Flood Resilience can enable communities adapt, respond and recover, enhancing their resilience to the impacts of climate change.” Peter May, Head of Resilience and Water Management
Asset Management Excellence Winner – JBA Bentley – Bentley Ings Pumping Station Refurbishment
The Asset Management Excellence award recognises best practice in routine operation, maintenance and emergency works to flood and coastal erosion risk management assets.
This project saw the JBA Bentley team replace the Bentley Ings Pumping Station’s 80-year-old pumps and engineer new infrastructure to ensure staff could safely access the site in flood conditions. By challenging the original scope, they were also able to save over 900T of carbon on the project. These low carbon refurbishments have improved the overall resilience of the pumping station, increasing pumping capacity by 20% in the event of flooding.
Claiming a Flood & Coast Excellence Award further adds to the success of this project, having already being named a gold winner at the International Green Apple Awards.
