Join us at the HEC-RAS 2D Modelling Workshop

Following the success of  the 2016 and 2017 workshops, we are excited to announce that the lead developers of the Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) software are once again coming to the UK on 25 – 27 June at CCT Venues, Barbican, London EC1.

This year’s workshop focuses on HEC-RAS v5.0.3 and the forthcoming v5.0.4 for 2D Modelling, giving you the chance to meet the software developers in person, ask those burning questions and learn from industry peers.

“We are working with the team at the HEC, plus other leading users of the HEC software, to bring you the chance to meet, learn, explore and discover the HEC software – which is available completely free and without restriction” commented Jeremy Benn, Executive Chairman for JBA Group.

An opportunity to showcase projects where HEC-RAS has been used in research and for schemes takes place on day one. This will be followed by a two-day advanced workshop in applying HEC-RAS for the analysis of hydraulic conditions in natural and constructed channels, utilising one-dimensional and two-dimensional modelling techniques.

Topics to be covered throughout the two days include

  • Developing terrain models for 2D modelling
  • Creating a 2D computational grid
  • Boundary conditions for 2D Flow Areas
  • Hooking up 1D elements to 2D Flow Areas
  • Running a combined 1D/2D model
  • Viewing 1D/2D results with RAS Mapper
  • Debugging 2D model computations.

Project showcasing

Workshop attendees are invited to showcase a project where the HEC-RAS software has been used, focusing on the new functionalities and efficiencies, by submitting a poster.

Please register your interest in the first instance so we can send you further guidelines for the poster submission.

Last year’s European HEC workshop

Feedback from last year’s event suggests delegates found it incredibly beneficial to meet and ask questions with the software developers. Several people also discussed the differences between American approaches to modelling compared to here in the UK and Europe.

“There are always many new things in the HEC software, so it is really useful to learn about developments, hopefully in 2018!”

“The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to talks to the guys from HEC-RAS and ask those questions Google didn’t even know the answer to. The case study presentations provided a great insight into how people are using the software on different projects.”

“I learned quite a lot from the event on hydrological modelling and how to apply HEC software to practical situations. Features discussed not only concentrated on the software, but also on general hydrological methods, which I found particularly useful.”

*This workshop is aimed at those with a good background in open channel hydraulics and you must be familiar with the HEC-RAS software. Basic HEC-RAS input and output data requirements will not be covered in this class. Some experience applying HEC-RAS using the Unsteady Flow modelling components is recommended.
