A Geotechnical Engineer and his graduate scheme experiences 

Hi, my name’s Callum Hanson and I’m an Assistant Geotechnical Engineer. Since joining the JBA geotechnical engineering team in September 2017, I have transferred from the Tadcaster to the Newcastle office as part of the graduate scheme rotation program. The program has successfully exposed me to a wide range of interdisciplinary engineering, flood modelling and environmental specialist teams across the company.

Callum Hanson, geotechnical graduate, at Tadcaster Grammar School Careers Fair

The flood modelling team in Skipton identified an area prone to coastal flooding to the south of Ulverston, Cumbria – the Bardsea branch. A disused railway embankment, the branch acts as a flood protection measure for the
Ulverston hinterland.

We have been commissioned to assess the current condition and performance of the asset. As part of the on-going assessment, I carried out a site walkover to identify structural defects that have a potential to affect the embankments performance as a flood defence.

Using our Earthworks Exam Database, I was able to visually assess and then record the earthwork condition and hazards along the disused railway. Using this method, we identified key areas of structural deterioration that require immediate engineering works to meet the required standards
of protection.

Engineering Geology MSc – JBA Consulting Sponsorship

As part of their commitment to support and develop employees, JBA has sponsored my MSc in Engineering Geology at Newcastle University. I am currently studying on a two-year part-time basis with allocated time off-work to
attend lectures and examinations. So far, I have been able to apply the course content directly to my work at the company.

For my MSc dissertation, I plan to research potential techniques to apply Borehole Magnetic Resonance technology, often used in the oil and gas industry, on a local scale. Such a device could allow geotechnical engineers to calculate in-situ pore water pressures which are vital to understanding the effective stresses in the subsurface.
