Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme: Creating Resilient Places

Following last winter’s flooding, the Government announced a multi-billion pound long-term plan in July to help better prepare the nation for future flooding.

Details of this Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme have been announced, confirming that the programme will allocate funding to 25 areas in England. Each of the selected projects will receive on average £6 million between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, to show how practical innovative actions can work individually and in combination to improve resilience to flooding and coastal erosion.

The Environment Agency and Defra are now requesting expressions of interest (EOI) from Lead Local Flood Authorities and Coast Protection Authorities. A set of 10 proposed themes for the resilience actions has been set out:

  • Integrated water management solutions
  • Nature based solutions
  • Property flood resilience
  • Community infrastructure resilience
  • Monitoring and management of local assets
  • Minimise damages and disruption to small and medium sized businesses
  • Community and voluntary sector action to be better prepared and recover more quickly
  • Local emergency response equipment
  • Enhanced flood warning systems
  • Investigate policy challenge areas
