Coastal flood modelling and forecasting at JBA

Learn more about our innovative approach to coastal hazard modelling and how you could help us achieve our aim of improving societal resilience to coastal flood hazards.

Our team

Coastal hazard modelling and forecasting is at the heart of marine and coastal risk management, and our team are passionate about supporting clients to improve their resilience to coastal hazards.

With a growing portfolio of work in the UK and internationally, there are a number of exciting opportunities to join our Marine and Coastal Risk Management team and play an integral role in helping us achieve our aims.

Our aims

Technology and innovation underpin our services in coastal hazard modelling and forecasting. We pioneer methods for national scale numerical modelling and the mapping of hazards and development of bespoke early warning systems. Essentially, we want to change the way the industry thinks about Coastal Flood Hazards. Our flood hazard mapping enables our clients to not only better understand risk and uncertainty, but to also plan for sustainable development and future climate change adaptation.

The latest science and technology

Our early warning systems are the first line of protection for communities in their fight to become more resilient in the face of climate change. Developing smarter systems that can integrate the best data effectively and efficiently is key to operational reliability, which improves and ultimately saves lives.

Our work utilises the latest science and technology in statistics, numerical modelling, artificial intelligence, machine learning and computational resource. This enables us to produce more accurate predictions, at larger scales, integrating better data and accounting for more processes and scenarios.

Crucially, increased risk of coastal flooding from sea level rise is a global problem with the most vulnerable communities often not having the resources to understand and reduce risk. We are committed to taking the latest science and technology and applying it globally to support our international partners to improve overall societal resilience.

Our approach

Modelling and forecasting coastal flood hazards is complex and requires expertise and input across a vast range of areas. At JBA we work as One Team. This means we provide our clients with end-to-end delivery through expertise in all aspects and stages of a project. To achieve this, and our overall aims, we need future leaders in:

  1. Flood inundation modelling
  2. Wave modelling
  3. Hydrodynamic modelling of tides and storm surges
  4. Wave overtopping
  5. Computational Fluid Dynamics
  6. Statistical and probabilistic modelling
  7. Forecasting systems
  8. Remote sensing and earth observation
  9. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning
  10. Software development and programming
