For the last year Paul Cleaver has been working in the Broad Scale Modelling team at our Broughton Hall, Skipton offices on his undergraduate work placement year from Coventry University. Supporting the delivery of mapping products for JBA Risk Management clients in the insurance and reinsurance industry, he has been assisting in the production of fluvial and surface water flood maps for the United States of America (USA) and some European countries.
He shares what he’s learnt with us and why it’s such a beneficial thing to undertake a work placement.
Professionally and personal development
Over the last nine months I have learnt a great deal. At the start I was shy, my knowledge of GIS was limited, and I never really questioned anything I did. Early on I was welcomed into the team and was constantly given support and training to help me develop in my role. After I settled in and gained a better understanding of my role I began to start questioning what we did and why, which allowed me to gain a better understanding on what our team does, what our clients do with the data and I found out more information about GIS/flood modelling too.
My placement at JBA has been an enjoyable and educational experience. I have not only been able to develop my skills but also as a person. Moving away from home for a placement was a very different experience than going to university, especially due to the distance but within the first few weeks I felt comfortable and a part of the team. My time at JBA has allowed me to gain opportunities I never would have been able to achieve at university – I would recommend placements to everyone.
