Barnstaple Flood Defence Improvements

Current and future flood risks in Barnstaple are cause for concern for Devon County and North Devon District Councils. As a result, we were commissioned by Devon County Council to investigate potential solutions to address future flood risk in Barnstaple.  Following completion of this Phase 1 work in 2015, we have been asked to further refine design options for one area, with consideration of ecological impact and landscape / visual impact assessment.

We assessed current and future flood risks, and tested a range of flood defence options to manage the future risks across the town.  During Phase 2, the team have further assessed the preferred option for part of the River Yeo; to realign the channel through Pilton Park.  Outline design concepts have been drawn up, together with an assessment of how the plans may impact on landscape and visual character.  Our ecologists based in Exeter have undertaken a Preliminary Ecological Assessment to understand whether any species could be affected by the proposed scheme.

North Devon District Council and Devon County Council now have an understanding of current and future flood risks in Barnstaple.  Through our Phase 2 works, North Devon District Council are understanding more about how the potential realignment along the River Yeo might be designed, and how the flood defence scheme would align with wider amenity and infrastructure improvements in the town.
