At JBA we’re proud to support and encourage colleagues in achieving their career aspirations. One of the ways we do this is by providing those who would like to build their experience working within our broader JBA family with secondment opportunities – at our offices in the UK and also within companies across the wider JBA Group. Read on to find out more.
Andrew Fielding, environmental scientist and GIS expert will soon be beginning a 2-month secondment with our colleagues at JBPacific in Australia. Andrew will be updating us from his base at their Brisbane office with news about projects, site visits, opportunities for learning and the experience of living somewhere new. Here’s how Andrew has been preparing for departure.
Life Upside Down
“It seems only yesterday that Dan Rodger visited the JBA Consulting office here in Warrington and put the idea into my head to explore what the wider JBA Group had to offer. One global pandemic and almost 4 years later, the time has finally come for me to up roots and go on secondment with JBPacific in Brisbane, Australia.
One week to go
With just a few days left before leaving the country, it has finally hit me that life is going to be a bit different for the next few months! I think the defining moment in this realisation was a combination of starting to pack, rapidly realising my wardrobe is not designed for a warm climate, and sending our two cats off on a holiday of their own to live with my parents.
Despite all this, I’ve made contact with my future colleagues at JBP and already feel like part of the team. I was a little alarmed when I got told to pack my ‘thongs’ to wear around the office – the local dialect will take some getting used to!
Overall, I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the work JBP has to offer alongside sharing the skills I’ve picked up throughout my career to date.”
Profile – Andrew Fielding
Andrew joined JBA after completing a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science at Edge Hill University specialising in hydrology and GIS. In 2013 he completed work experience with Sefton MBC, working with the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) department. He also has experience with the Environment Agency North West Region where he worked as part of the Modelling and Hydrology team.
Since joining JBA in 2014, Andrew has applied his GIS and modelling experience across a wide range of both local and national-scale projects and completed a PGCert in Flood and Coastal Risk management at Lancaster University. He has gained a good understanding of available spatial datasets and developed efficiency improvements through automating processes with programming.
