Leading in society’s pursuit for resilience – an integrated approach

Resilience in the face of climate change will drive much of the work we do in the coming years. Our ambition is to lead the way in providing innovative, integrated and sustainable solutions to address the climate challenges we face. Read on as Steve Maslen explores how collaborative working is crucial to us achieving this ambition.

Integrated environmental and engineering teams

With increased risks from climate change and the need to build resilience into our assets and communities plus mitigate climate change by adopting low-carbon solutions, we are faced with increasingly complex challenges.

Over the years, particularly in our Leeds and Peterborough offices, we’ve had close working relationships between our environmental staff and our design engineers and construction teams. Having environmental experts present on projects right from the very initial stages has been crucial to anticipating any environmental issues and allowing us to design the right solution for the client the first time.

Wider integration

To rise to these challenges, the solutions we deliver will require even further integration, with projects needing people with a wide range of skills to work on them. Beyond our Environment and Engineering teams we’ll need to draw on expertise across all our different disciplines at JBA.

Skills opportunities

This in turn will provide lots of opportunities for our staff to learn from each other and develop their skills by working on increasingly challenging projects. For example, there are huge benefits to our engineers in understanding more about the environmental and ecological issues they might face on a project – as it’s often the unknowns that can catch you out.

Designing innovative solutions that make a real difference

Some years ago, these issues might have been seen as a barrier to overcome. But with understanding and input from our environmental experts, they can be seen as a real opportunity, to be part of designing innovative solutions that make a real difference.

This integrated, holistic approach delivers benefits to the environment and our communities; to our staff and their development; and ultimately to our clients – who are increasingly looking for these kinds of solutions from us.
