Graduate recruitment – Frequently asked questions

  1. How soon will I get to know if my application has been successful?

As soon as you submit your Water Management/Geoscience or Environmental Management/Sustainability application electronically you will get an automated response confirming receipt. A further email will be sent within 3 weeks of the scheme closing date to let you know if we are inviting you to interview or if your application has been unsuccessful.

  1. How does the application process progress?

The application process opens in September and runs until the end of October. If you are successful and invited to interview, we expect to hold these virtually in December (subject to change). Interviews and assessments will be held via video and will most likely take at least half a day.

  1. Can I stipulate which JBA office I am interested in working in?

JBA have embraced a flexible working approach, which includes some opportunities for home working as well as a flexi-time system.  However, we do encourage our graduates and early career staff to spend as much time as possible working alongside colleagues in an office environment, to maximise the support and mentoring opportunities this brings. If you have specific working arrangements or office locations in mind, these should be highlighted in your application so we can best match you with wider working arrangements.

Although JBA Group currently operates 20 offices throughout the UK and Ireland, your options may be limited by the discipline/work area you apply for. For example, we principally take on Graduates in Ecology to work within teams based in our Doncaster, Exeter and Newport offices, whilst Graduates applying to our Software discipline intake should expect to be based in either Skipton or Wallingford.

  1. What is the salary/benefits?

Salary expectations and benefits package will be discussed at interview stage. Our salaries are competitive and our Graduates enjoy biannual salary increases reflecting paced development and new skills.

Other benefits include personal pension, profit-share, life assurance, permanent health insurance, medical/dental assistance, buy/sell annual leave scheme and flexible working hours within core contracted hours.

  1. What can I expect from the scheme?

Successful applicants will be offered a full-time permanent contract (subject to probationary period and references). In return for your commitment and enthusiasm we will continue to train and mentor you throughout your time with JBA. We hope you will make your career with us and we expect you to advance through our organisation.

  1. If my degree doesn’t relate specifically to your disciplines, i.e. Engineering/Geography/Environmental/Computer Science, would I still be considered?

Yes, applications are particularly welcomed from graduates in maths, physics, statistics and other subjects evidencing numeracy and problem solving. We are interested in applicants from a range of diverse backgrounds and educational institutions, who may bring more than simply qualifications to the table such as varied life situations, hobbies and interests and prior work experiences that stand out.

  1. Can I make multiple applications?

This year we are specifically looking to fill places within Engineering, Science & Flood management, Environmental Management and Software.  If you are interested in more than one position, only apply for one but make your interests clear on your application form.  

  1. I’m not a recent graduate, is there an age restriction?

We have no age restrictions but expect those applying to join us through Graduate Recruitment to have recently gained a degree or post-graduate qualification. Those with relevant industry experience should refer to webpage to find out more about specific job opportunities with us.

  1. I’ve got a Bachelors degree, do I need a Masters or other post-graduate qualification to be considered?

No, post graduate qualifications are advantageous but we welcome applications from undergraduates (results pending) and 1st degree only graduates.

  1. I have a Doctoral degree, would I still be considered?

We do welcome applications from those with recent relevant PhDs (or who are currently undertaking their doctoral research). We do acknowledge the considerable experience that can be gained through such self-directed studies and in some circumstances offer accelerated progression through the Graduate Scheme for those falling into this category.

  1. As a non-EU resident can I still apply?

Regrettably, we are unable to sponsor non-UK citizens who do not have eligibility to work in the UK and request that this information is taken into consideration prior to making an application.

  1. How many places are available?

This year we expect to recruit between 30-40 graduates.

  1. Do I have to apply for JBA Risk Management graduate scheme separately?

Yes, they are separate schemes and will hold separate interview days.
