2D River Modelling Overview
Cost:
£275.00
Duration:
1.0 day(s)
Overview
This course provides an introduction to the capabilities and application for 2D models for flood studies, sediment transport and tidal/coastal modelling.
Who should attend
Professionals and managers wanting a non-mathematical and easily understood introduction to the mysteries of river modelling.
Course outcomes
By attending the course delegates will:
- Learn about the different types of 2D models
- Appreciate some of the theory of 2D modelling
- Have an overview of the various software packages available
- Understand where and how problems occur in 2D modelling studies
Topics covered
- Generic model types (routing, hydrodynamic, boundary fitted)
- Overview of proprietary software (JFLOW,TUFLOW, MIKE-21, DIVAST, ISIS-2D, InfoWorks 2D)
- Data requirements for 2D models (boundary conditions, roughness, topography)
- Using 2D models for flood mapping
- Using 2D models for breach/overtopping analysis
- Using 2D for drainage exceedence modelling
- Integrating 2D models with 1D models
- What can go wrong with 2D models
- Model audit/review
- Budget costing of model studies
- Effective project management of 2D modelling studies
The course includes case studies and some ‘hands-on’ modelling using JFLOW, although no previous experience of JFLOW is required. The course includes information from the CIRIA guidance note ‘Development and flood risk – guidance for the construction industry’ published in 2004 and Environment Agency guidance on modelling Areas Benefiting from a Defence.
