Senior or Principal Coastal Analyst

We are currently seeking an experienced scientist or engineer to join our Coastal Risk Management team.  The focus of this team is the marine environment and its risks and opportunities.  These include the risks of flooding and erosion along with opportunities for developing tidal stream and wave technologies.  Our team has a strong focus on R&D and the development of innovative analysis and modelling techniques.

The successful candidate for this post will be expected to perform as a technical specialist and a project/resource manager.  Experience with respect to business development and the UK flood consultancy sector will also be beneficial.  The successful candidate is expected to be based in either our Haywards Heath office or our Skipton office.  It will also be necessary to visit other JBA offices in the UK and Ireland.  A reasonable amount of additional client related travel is expected.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants are expected to have an MSc or PhD in Oceanography, Civil or Offshore Engineering or another relevant Geo-science.  Chartered status (CIWEM, ICE) is required.

Applicants should have a strong and broad technical background with at least five years’ experience in a relevant position.  Expertise with respect to some or all of the following is required:

  • Numerical modelling (e.g., sediment transport modelling, flood inundation, wave transformation, wave overtopping, water quality)
  • Coastal geomorphology (coastal erosion analysis, erosion management, beach management)
  • Development of Shoreline Management Plans
  • Coastal flood defence design and engineering
  • Extreme sea level and wave analysis
  • Flood forecasting
  • Climate change
  • Wave and tidal-stream energy technology
  • Statistical analysis
  • Geographical Information Systems (GIS is used extensively on all our projects)

Of particular importance for this position is experience with respect to the analysis and numerical modelling of sediment transport, coastal erosion and beach evolution processes.  Expertise with respect to beach management practices, coastal flood defence design and the development of Shoreline Management Plans are other key assets.

JBA Consulting is a heavily client focused organisation.  Excellent report writing and effective communication skills are therefore essential to this role. Self motivation and good organisational skills are also essential.

The Location

While the successful candidate is expected to be based in either our Skipton office or Haywards Heath office, residence at one of our other offices will be considered for strong candidates.  In any case, it will be necessary for the successful candidate to be based in our Skipton office for an initial period of employment, to develop links with and to ensure continuity of practices with our core coastal team (whose centre of excellence is based in Skipton).
